What were you like in high school?
You probably wouldn't believe it, but when I was a teenager I was pretty quiet. I was also very geeky. I was definitely an art nerd, and I hung out with a lot of other really nerdy kids. I was raised as an only child, and I was never really big on big groups. I guess that didn't put me anywhere in the league of the popular, pretty, or perfect crowd.
What’s the most spontaneous thing you’ve ever done?
One of the most spontaneous things I've ever done occurred when I was travelling in Vietnam, part of a six-month around the world trip I was doing some years ago. I met a novice monk in a temple, who approached me with an English phrasebook. He invited me to sit in the temple with him and we undertook a two hour English lesson, we were quickly joined by many children and it was a lot of fun teaching them how to pronounce English words.
What kind of music did you listen to?
Music that I listen to when I was in high school was mostly reggae. I was a huge Bob Marley fan. I also listen to a lot of world beat music. As for rock musicians nothing could ever top Led Zeppelin! I was and still am totally in love with the band. However even as a youth I listened to a lot of jazz. That's my favourite kind of music now.
What would you be if you weren’t a teacher?
If I weren't a teacher, I would've gone into journalism. My second favourite passion was always writing. If I could turn that into something that I would love to do today, I would be a travel writer.
Who are your heroes in real life?
My hero in my life is my mom. She's no longer with me now, I miss her. She was a super strong woman. She had a huge heart, was incredibly resourceful and creative. And most important of all she was giving, loving, and accepting, and just the very way that you expect a mom to be.
What is your pet peeve?
At school it's the kids who don't pick up their garbage off the floor, who don't care or respect the place they spend most of their day in. And then it's those people who walk and text at the same time with their heads down-like they expect you to get out of their way in the halls.
..........Outside of school, my pet peeve are people in the TTC who are just gross, disrespectful, and selfish. Who hog more than one seat, rush the doors when others are exiting, or eat their food and drop it all over the place-that's just gross!
